Uncle Seth at C'est What

It's true! The first Uncle Seth show in 5 years is happening on September 13, 2012 at one of our all-time favourite venues, C'est What in Toronto.

It all started with singer Amaya Thompson contacting the other band members about doing a show to, as she put it, "commemorate the 5th anniversary of my 25th birthday." Jay Moonah, Chris Patheiger and Blake Papsin answered the call, and recruited bassist extraordinare Mark Sinclair to help fill out the sound.

The cover for this show is just $6. You can purchase tickets in advance on the C'est What website.

We hope to see you at C'est What on September 13!

Amaya and Jay debate the "edginess" (not to be confused with "truthiness") of current Canadian political & social satire on television. Ooooo, sounds heavy. Well not really, not the way we do it.

Coverville Idol second place finish!

I'm happy to report that Tara's and my version of Emerson Lake & Palmer's "Still... You Turn Me On" placed second in the 1973 edition of Coverville Idol! Only Andrew Rothman's terrific version of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" got more votes. Thanks to all who voted, and to the always amazing Brian Ibbott of Coverville. And congrats to Brian on his upcoming show #300, a great milestone!

Live streaming from PodCamp Toronto

Thanks to our friends from Ryerson University and C'est What Brew/Vin Pub, it appears the vast majority of PodCamp Toronto happenings will be available in realtime via streaming media links.

Visit the schedule page for the Quicktime video links for each presentation room, and for the Shoutcast audio link for Saturday night's performance from C'est What featuring Uncle Seth, +nurse & Sean McGaughey:

Unfortunately these streams will not be monitored at all times so we can't promise they will always be up, but with any luck you'll be able to partake in a great deal of the PodCamp Toronto from the comfort of your broadband connection.

Please feel free to blog or otherwise pass this information along to anyone not lucky enough to be here in Toronto for what promises to be an amazing weekend!

Coverville Idol! Cast your vote.

We are very proud to be a part of Coverville Idol! Coverville, as you may know, is the fantastic all cover song podcast hosted by the very excellent Brian Ibbott. Coverville Idol gives musicians the opportunity to submit cover songs on a certain theme. This time out the theme was all songs from 1973. To that end Tara and I recorded a stripped down version of the Emerson, Lake & Palmer ballad "Still... You Turn Me On" which Brian kindly included in the show. Check it out along with the other entries:

Much like the American & Canadian Idol shows, there are judges but the real decision makers are YOU the fans! So please check out the show and cast your votes. Obviously we'd love for you to vote for us, but there are some other good competitors worthy of your attention so check them out as well.

Voting and individual song downloads are on the Coverville site at:

Anniversary Week happenings

Retailers would like you to think of this as "Boxing Week" but to us in Uncle Seth it will always be "Anniversary Week!" Yes, it's been 8 years since the very first Uncle Seth show, and to celebrate we have THREE special events -- two virtual and one in real life!

For those who missed our November 24th "simulcast" in the virtual world of Second Life, we'll be doing a replay at our brand new house in Second Life on SoHo Island as part of our housewarming party. The fun starts at 7 pm Eastern (4 pm Pacific) Time TOMORROW (December 27th). You can get there via our special URL:

And back in Second Life the very next night (Thursday December 28th), we'll be doing an acoustic show at Podcast Island's Death Before Decaf Coffee House at 7:30 pm Eastern (4:30 pm Pacific). You can get there by going to:

(link is at the bottom of the page)

Finally, later on Thursday night you'll be able to catch Uncle Seth in the real world at Gary Seventeen's holiday party at the Renaissance Cafe (1938 Danforth Ave. in Toronto). We'll be on sometime after 10 pm for a 15-minute acoustic set, with lots of other great acts filling out the bill!

Hope you can join us for one of these events, and if not we hope you can catch you us 2007 -- it's shaping up to be an amazing year for Uncle Seth!

Uncle Seth in Second Life

Uncle Seth's Lucky Kiosk #13 in Second LifeI've just established a permanent presence for Uncle Seth in Second Life. We've now got a small storefront on the popular island Music City that I'm affectionately calling "Uncle Seth's Lucky Kiosk #13".

I've also created a direct web link to the storefront at the URL secondlifeband.com.

FYI, Uncle Seth is planning a big Second Life gig in late November, but in the meantime you can catch me doing solo shows there under my SL alias Weiss Plessis. My next gig is at the RoC, just around the corner from Kiosk #13. Appropriately enough, it's on Friday the 13th at 5 pm Pacific Time (SL time and Pacific Time are the same.) Come check it out!

CBC Single Debut & Interview, TIMA Nomination, Applefest!

Three, count 'em three, very excellent pieces of Uncle Seth news:

1) Tomorrow (Saturday September 16) sometime between 5:05 - 6 pm Eastern time, CBC Radio One's show Bandwidth from Ottawa will be debuting the latest Uncle Seth single "To Be An Angel" and broadcasting an interview of Tara and Jay conducted by host Alan Neal earlier this week. The interview focused on the band's recent visit to Boston for PodCamp, and their success with podcasting as a promotional medium.

Unfortunately Bandwidth doesn't archive their shows, so to hear it you'll either have to listen live on the radio in the listening area (in Ontario but NOT in Toronto) or check out the live stream from the website:

2) Uncle Seth are very proud to be nominated once again for the Toronto Independent Music Awards. This year the band is nominated in the category of "Classic Rock"... hmmm, don't really feel old enough to be a classic but what the heck! Check out the many great acts nominated on the website at:

3) Like apples? Well we sure do! In fact, we like 'em so much that we're celebrating by playing a couple of acoustic sets at the 22nd Annual Markham Applefest. For details, check out the Uncle Seth Shows page at:

Podcasting PSA - "You Don't Need An iPod"

Back in July, I did an interview with John C. Haven's from the About.com Guide To Podcasting about Uncle Seth's involvement with, well, podcasting. After we did the interview, John asked if Uncle Seth would be interested in recording a "public service announcement" about podcasting, and in particular emphasizing that listening to podcasts does NOT require an iPod (a common misconception). We thought this sounded like fun, so John sent along some rough lyrics. We worked these up into a little ditty, and I created some kooky-animation to go along with it.

We released this on YouTube yesterday. Hope you enjoy it! Please comment here or on the YouTube site, and feel free to share with your friends and colleagues via the nifty "Share" button in the window.

Oh yeah, there's also an MP3 version on this page for podcasters (and anyone else) to play. It's 100% "podsafe"

John, thanks again for inviting us to do this, and we look forward to seeing you (and many others) at PodCamp in Boston!

Mariposa Showcase

This past Sunday, Uncle Seth were invited to perform at the Mariposa Showcase at the Highwayman Inn in Orillia. This event was judged by a panel who selected 3 of the acts performing that afternoon for spots at the Mariposa Festival this summer. Although Uncle Seth were not selected, we'd like to thank the showcase committee who selected us out of more than 70 applicants to audition. We'd also like to congratulate the winners: Michael Laderoute, Fig for a Kiss and StoneFox.

And speaking of festivals, just a reminder that on Thursday Uncle Seth will be play a feature at Winterfolk founder Brian Gladstone's weekly open stage at Renaissance Cafe on the Danforth. Visit the Uncle Seth Shows page for details.

Today marks the second anniversary of a phone call from my friend Chris Patheiger delivering the sad news of the death of our good friend Matthew Osborne just a couple of weeks short of his 32nd birthday. In our second podcast episode, the members of the band share stories about this amazing man.

We miss you Matty.

New single, new photos, new bio, new drummer!

Hey folks! Some excellent Uncle Seth news I really wanted to share:

First of all, our new single "Both Sides, Now" is now officially released!
We'd highly recommend purchasing a copy through the iTunes Music Store. It's just 99 cents - how can you beat that?!?

Oh, and speaking of our website, we've made some major updates to the site.
These include a brand new band bio by the very wonderful Lisa Johnson,
spectacular new photos by the very excellent Jim Lynch, and most important of
all, the inclusion of our brand new percussionist and drummer, the very
talented Mr. Chris Patheiger!

Many of you will know that Chris has been a guest and sub with Uncle Seth for
many years, and we're extraordinarily pleased that he has agreed to join the
group on a full-time basis. Welcome aboard Chris!

There is plenty afoot for Uncle Seth in the weeks and months ahead. Watch
for tour news, including a potential trip out to visit our many friends on
the east coast later in 2006!

Miguel's and "Both Sides, Now"

First, thanks to all who came out for the Lennon & Harrison tribute show last night. A messy-but-fun set from Uncle Seth was followed by a bunch of other terrific artists covering the best of the departed Beatles. Thanks to Tom Glenn and Ryan Ayukawa for putting the show together.

On to new business...

To celebrate the release of their new single, a cover version of the Joni Mitchell song "Both Sides, Now", UNCLE SETH will be playing a special ALL-COVER SONG set on January 28th.

The show takes place at the legendary Miguel's Club 329 in Toronto at 329 Queen Street East at Parliament! See this Google Maps link for directions.

And YOU can help pick the songs! Here's how:

1) go to http://musicface.com/uncleseth/
2) hit the big friendly button that says "Uncle Seth Cover Song Vote"
3) follow the instructions to vote for the cover songs you'd most or least like to hear

Voting will remain open until January 21, and the band will play the top ranked songs at Miguel's. How cool is THAT?!?

And as a special bonus, all those who fill out the survey will have a chance to win FABULOUS PRIZES at the 28th show! (Okay I admit it, we don't know exactly WHAT the prizes are yet, but they will be fabulous, we promise!)

So head to http://musicface.com/uncleseth/ right now and cast your vote! More details on the Miguel's show will be coming your way very soon, so stay tuned!

December happenings

Hey folks! A very quick note about a couple of Seth events in the next few days.

Today (Saturday) we will be part of "Canadian Music Fan Fare", a unique event happening at Reilly's (3340 Yonge Street, right across the street from Sam The Record Man). The action goes from 1 pm until 7 pm. We, along with 30 other independent artists and labels, will be selling CDs and other merch. Note that I'll also have Matt Osborne CDs and t-shirts if anyone still has to pick those up (and if you haven't, you should!)

On Thursday, we'll be a part of a Green Party Fund Raising Concert, hosted by Brian Gladstone at Renaissance Cafe (1938 Danforth Ave., near Woodbine.) Whether or not you are likely to vote the Green Party, they have an important message that needs to be heard - global climate change is one of the most important issues of our times, and the major parties feet must be kept to the fire on this. We in Uncle Seth feel the Greens deserve and need a strong voice, so please come out and give generously.

Speaking of the Renaissance, stay tuned for news of the 6th Uncle Seth anniversary party happening there on December 30th - lots of fun details to come.

So I was reviewing old setlists on the website, and I realized that the last time Uncle Seth played a regular full-band club show in Toronto was the middle of May! While we've certainly been enjoying the great outdoors this summer, it's time to get back to the bars and play some rock'n'roll in its native environment.

Next Friday (the 14th) you can catch Seth along with our friends Factor Fiction and Tranquil at the Black Swan Tavern at Broadview and Danforth. Doors open at 9 pm, Uncle Seth will be second on the bill.

Uncle Seth Family Picnic

Hey everyone...
You're invited to a picnic!

That's right, on Saturday August 20th from 2pm till about 5pm UNCLE SETH will be hosting a good, old fashioned, bring a basket and watch for bears picnic in Toronto.

The UNCLE SETH FAMILY PICNIC will probably not feature any bears but will take place around the valley stage in Trinity-Bellwoods park (1053 Dundas St W. 2 blocks west of Bathurst) on August 20th from 2pm till 5pm.

There will be blankets and baskets and music. Several artists will perform summer afternoon sets, including a full set from UNCLE SETH.

In the next couple of days a full list of performers will be announced. The event is, of course, totally free and a rare chance to see the band in a family friendly non-bar setting!!!

We don't normally get to see any of you guys in the daylight so we're super excited.

See you on the 20th! More info to follow.
